WHY YELLOWFIN TUNA?

(WHY NOT?)

The yellowfin tuna is mid-size tuna species, which is bigger than the skipjack but smaller than the bluefin. An adult yellofin tuna can reach over 180 kg. This migratory fish can be found in most tropical and subtropical zones. In Malaysia, the fish is mainly caught off the coast of Sabah.

As the name implies, a yellowfin tuna is characterised by its bright yellow dorsal and anal fins. It has metallic, dark blue back and yellowish silver belly. Its streamlined, torpedo-shaped body makes it a fast swimmer.

Yellowfin tuna is preferred by many due to its mild flavour and leaner meat. It is also very versatile as you can find it as sashimi and sushi in Japanese restaurants or as tuna steak in western eateries.

Yellowfin tuna is also a healthier protein choice as it is low in calory. A serving of 85 grams (about the size of a regular-portioned steak) yellowfin tuna has only 93 calories. This portion provides approximately 21 grams of protein and only 0.42 grams of fat.

Yellowfin tuna is also low in fats and cholesterol, and contains no carbohydrates or sugar, making it a perfect choice for those aiming to maintain an ideal weight or even lose weight.

Here are some of the health benefits of eating yellowfin tuna:

1. Friendly to your Heart

As with most other fish, yellowfin tuna is high in omega-3 fatty acids which helps in regulating blood clotting and bringing balance to the blood vessels, thus helps to prevent heart disease and maintaining good heart health.

2. Lowers Blood Pressure

Tuna is rich in potassium, and combined with its omega-3 fatty acids, it helps to reduce blood pressure, thus lowering the risk of stroke.

3. Improves the Immune System

Tuna is rich in manganese, zinc, vitamin C and selenium, which help in strengthening the immune system. These antioxidants protect us from diseases like cancer by fighting the free radicals—the by-products of metabolism on the cellular level.

4. Strengthens Your Bones

Tuna contains Vitamin B which is a major component in strengthening bones. This vitamin makes the bones stronger and protects them from injuries like fracture.

5. Improves Your Skin Health

The Vitamin B complex in the fish helps in keeping our skin healthy. It contains a protein called elastin which gives a smooth tone to our skin.

6. Prevents Risk Of Cancer

Antioxidants from the tuna meat fight cancer cells. Studies have shown that regular consumption of tuna helps in eliminating the risk of breast and kidney cancer.

7. Provides Energy

Tuna improves your metabolism rate as well as increases the functionality of your organs which keeps your body energetic, active and healthy.
